109-year-old Phyllis Furness, believed to be Ireland's oldest person, has passed away in Galway. Born in England as Phyllis Olwyn Ryder, she moved to Ireland with her husband in 1981. Furness, who celebrated her 109th birthday on May 23rd at Moycullen Nursing Home, expressed her desire to reach her 110th birthday and become a supercentenarian. She was an active member of the local community and received greetings from British royalty, as well as commemorative coins from Irish President Michael D Higgins since her 100th birthday.
