Scientists in Scotland have developed a method to extract valuable chemicals from whisky distillery waste, turning 2.6 billion litres of waste into £90m worth of products. The extracted chemicals, including lactic acid from pot ale and spent lees, have potential applications in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food and drink, and cosmetics. The process, supported by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre, uses liquid chromatography and could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from whisky production.
