A harrowing video released for Rail Safety Week in New Zealand showcases a near-fatal collision between a train and a car at a level crossing, despite installed warning signs and bells. In the year to June 30, 19 collisions and 173 near-misses were reported at level crossings. To emphasize individual responsibility around railway tracks, KiwiRail and TrackSAFE are urging motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists to properly look both ways before crossing train tracks during Rail Safety Week. In the past 10 years, over 170 people have died in train collisions in New Zealand.
