Generation X and Millennials have a higher risk of 17 types of cancer than previous generations, with obesity possibly a leading cause.

A study from the American Cancer Society reveals that Generation X and Millennials have a higher risk of developing 17 types of cancer compared to previous generations. Analyzing data from 23 million patients diagnosed with 34 types of cancer and seven million people who died from 25 types of cancer, researchers found that certain cancers previously declining in older adults are rising among younger individuals. Obesity is likely a leading cause of the increased risk, as it is linked to 20% of cancer diagnoses in the US. Other potential factors include a more sedentary lifestyle, changes in food or water, common medications or chemical exposures, and antibiotic overuse. The study highlights the importance of identifying and addressing underlying risk factors to inform prevention strategies for Generation X and Millennials.
