3D-printed hair follicle models developed by Helmholtz Institute researchers aid in testing new drug candidates for hair follicle infections.

3D-printed hair follicle models have been developed by researchers at Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS). These models mimic the skin's conditions and can help in testing the effectiveness of new drug candidates directly on human follicles, aiding in the treatment of hair follicle infections, which are difficult to treat due to bacteria settling in the gap between hair and skin. The models, published in the journal ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering, were created by embedding human hair follicles in a 3D-printed matrix.
