New Zealand EPA approves Uromyces pencanus fungus to combat invasive Chilean needle grass.
New Zealand's Environmental Protection Authority has approved the use of a rust fungus, Uromyces pencanus, as a biocontrol agent to combat the invasive Chilean needle grass, which has expanded to 2,615 hectares across Marlborough. The fungus specifically targets the weed, slowing its growth and seed production, and is unlikely to harm native plants, animals, or humans. If left unchecked, the weed could cost farmers $1.16 billion in lost production nationally.
