Australia experiences a rise in gambling-related harm, particularly among young males, as sports betting doubles and problem gamblers make up a significant portion of spending.
Australia faces a surge in gambling-related harm as sports betting doubles in the past five years. Now, over a quarter of 18-24-year-old men and a third of 25-34-year-old men bet on sports. Over one-third of all sports betting spending comes from people with gambling problems, with some betting companies having up to 20% of their customer base made up of problem gamblers. This has led to increased mental health issues, partner violence, and even suicide, with the financial loss from gambling also causing chronic health and mental health issues.
