Hilary Benn, a veteran parliamentarian and former cabinet minister, has been appointed as the new Northern Ireland Secretary by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Benn, who had served as shadow Northern Ireland secretary and chairman of the Brexit Select Committee, previously stated that a Labour government would repeal the Legacy Act, which was introduced by the Tories to address Troubles legacy issues and opposed by all main political parties in Northern Ireland.
