Gaston County Sheriff's Deputy Phillip J. Maxwell died after suffering a medical emergency at the county detention center. He was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Maxwell served 20 years with the department and had 13 years in military service, 4 in the US Army and 9 in the Army Reserves. The department mourned his loss and expressed gratitude for his service.
