Research with former Nigerian Boko Haram insurgents has found that hatred of Western education was not the primary motivation for joining the group, contrary to their reputation. Instead, many respondents acknowledged the value of Western education for finding employment, handling everyday life situations, and achieving societal progress, despite the insurgency leaders' views. The study, involving 13 in-depth interviews and five group conversations, found that those with limited Qur'anic education or no education at all were often sent into combat, highlighting the importance of Western education for tactical advantages.
