AT&T CEO John Stankey has called for Congress to give the FCC authority to make major tech firms contribute to a government fund, the Universal Service Fund, which subsidizes telecom and broadband services. This comes as Congress has allocated $17B since 2020 for internet access for lower-income families. The issue gained urgency when a broadband subsidy program ran out of funds in May.
