South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced efforts to raise awareness of crimes against vulnerable adults, including renaming the unit that investigates them. Wilson stated that the unit historically investigated and prosecuted crimes against vulnerable adults but was largely unknown to the public. The renaming to the Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud Unit aims to increase public awareness of the crimes, which often involve abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older citizens and those with intellectual impairments.
