New Zealand's government is making it easier for people to build granny flats, according to Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters & RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop. The initiative aims to increase affordability for families and create new living options, such as accommodating university-age children or providing extra support to loved ones. The National-NZ First Coalition Agreement requires the government to amend the Building Act and resource consent system to make it simpler to build granny flats or other small structures up to 60m2.
