McMaster University research shows pantoprazole, a common heartburn drug, prevents upper GI bleeding in critically ill adults on mechanical ventilators.

McMaster University-led research published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that the widely available drug pantoprazole, commonly used for treating heartburn, helps prevent upper gastrointestinal bleeding in critically ill adults on a breathing machine. The study investigated the effect of pantoprazole on patients in the ICU who require a mechanical ventilator, as it prevents stress-induced ulcers in the stomach.
