The European Court of Justice has fined Hungary €200 million for violating EU asylum laws and illegally deporting migrants. The country faces an additional daily penalty of €1 million until it fully complies. Hungary had not complied with a 2020 ruling that required changes to its asylum system. The European Court of Justice considers this failure to be an unprecedented and extremely serious breach of EU law.
