35-year-old Waikato mother, Meleseke Aogamalie, was sentenced to 12 months' supervision for attempting to pervert the course of justice. She sent a child with injuries in her care overseas to avoid a police investigation, despite warnings from social workers. The child had come to live with Aogamalie from overseas and was found with injuries consistent with assault. An assault charge was withdrawn by the crown.
