Space flight alters kidney structure and function due to galactic radiation, posing risks for Mars missions.
New research led by UCL suggests that space flight alters kidney structure and function due to galactic radiation, posing risks for Mars missions. The study, published in Nature Communications, is the largest analysis of kidney health in spaceflight and includes the first health dataset for commercial astronauts. Space radiation, including solar winds and Galactic Cosmic Radiation, is thought to cause health issues like kidney stones, bone loss, heart weakening, and vision damage.
