Winter illness and long weekends impact school attendance: Daily attendance rates dropped from 89% at the start of the school term to 82-84% in late May, with a 73% attendance rate on the Friday before the King's Birthday long weekend. In Hawke's Bay Tairāwhiti and Canterbury, attendance dropped to 62% and 65% respectively. Meanwhile, just 15% of students met the government benchmark for attendance in all four terms of 2023.
