13 cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in Toronto, highest since 2002; officials recommend vaccination.
Toronto public health officials warn of a rise in invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases, the highest total since 2002. With 13 cases reported this year, including two fatalities, officials recommend vaccination for residents. Meningococcal disease is a severe infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis and can be life-threatening. The disease is most common in children under five, teens, and young adults without immunization.
