Phoenix Fire Department introduces cold water immersion for heatstroke victims, equipping emergency vehicles with immersion bags.

Phoenix Fire Department has implemented a new heatstroke treatment method involving cold water immersion for victims on their way to hospitals. In response to 645 heat-related deaths last year, the technique is expected to lower body temperature quickly, improving patient survivability. Cold water immersion bags have become standard equipment on all Phoenix fire department emergency vehicles. The city is also keeping two cooling stations open overnight this season, as the National Weather Service predicts the hottest weather since September for much of the area.
