The Northern Territory government has declared a special reserve status over the Jabiluka area in Kakadu, providing protection against uranium mining, in a move welcomed by the Australian Conservation Foundation and local Mirarr Traditional Owners. This follows a 25-year battle by the Mirarr people to protect their land and culture from mining. However, uranium miner Energy Resources of Australia has not given up hope of extending its Jabiluka mining lease.
