University of Sydney study links childhood maltreatment to over 40% of common mental health conditions in Australia.

A University of Sydney study finds that childhood maltreatment, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, and emotional or physical neglect, accounts for nearly half of common mental health conditions in Australia, including suicide attempts, self-harm, depression, anxiety, harmful alcohol and drug use. The study is the first to provide estimates of the proportion of mental health conditions arising from childhood maltreatment and highlights the need for increased awareness and support for victims of child abuse.
