40-year-old children with maltreatment history have 3-times higher hospital admissions for alcohol and substance use disorders, per a University of Queensland study.

Children who experienced maltreatment are 3 times more likely to be admitted to hospital for alcohol and substance use disorders by the time they're 40, compared to those who were not maltreated, according to a study by the University of Queensland. The longitudinal study analysed data from over 6,000 children born in Brisbane between 1981 and 1983 and found that those abused or neglected were 2.86 times more likely to be admitted for alcohol use disorders and 3.34 times more likely for substance use disorders.
