Provincial court judge rejects "defence of necessity" argument for climate activists Howard Breen and Melanie Murray, who blocked roads in Nanaimo to raise awareness about the climate emergency. Breen and Murray were convicted of multiple mischief charges relating to protests against old-growth forest logging in 2022. Breen, co-founder of Extinction Rebellion Vancouver Island, was also found guilty of breaching an undertaking by impeding traffic on a public roadway. Other charges were stayed as duplicates.
