Economist John FitzGerald claims that forcing Ireland's equal education system on Northern Ireland's middle class would be "unpopular" due to Northern Ireland's current educational system not offering equality of opportunity to children from different backgrounds. FitzGerald, an adjunct professor at Trinity College Dublin, told the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement that if Northern Ireland were to reform its education system, it would reduce the cost of a potential unification. FitzGerald's report, published last month, estimated that the reunification of Ireland would cost approximately €20 billion a year for two decades.
