2024 Pacific Rally sailors, using TorpeDNA device, collect DNA samples and 3D coral reef data for New Zealand's Citizens of the Sea charity to enhance marine biodiversity assessment.

New Zealand's Citizens of the Sea charity, co-founded by Cawthron Institute and New Zealand Geographic, partners with Illumina to empower sailors in the 2024 Pacific Rally to collect DNA samples and 3D coral reef data. Using the TorpeDNA sampling device, sailors will contribute to a dataset of environmental variables, providing a more comprehensive and faster assessment of biodiversity in marine environments than traditional physical surveys. The data will be publicly accessible via the charity's website in late 2024.
