Centuries-old coral from Australia's Torres Strait returned home after U.S. stay.
Coral taken from the Torres Strait in Australia over 100 years ago has been returned from the U.S. The corals, identified as from Mer Island, hold significant cultural and ecological value for the Torres Strait community, used in ceremonies and traditional practices. The return, following two years of negotiations, was led by Meriam Traditional Owners, Queensland Museum, and Torres Strait Regional Authority. The corals will be kept at the Queensland Museum in Townsville under an agreement with the Meriam Traditional Owners, symbolizing a reconnection to ancestral lands.
