Trend Micro researchers discovered that nation-state spies and cybercriminals coexist in compromised name-brand routers, utilizing these devices to mask financially motivated and strategic espionage attacks. Hackers may exchange access to compromised routers for payment or take control of devices already hacked by cybercrime groups. This coexistence in routers, VPN devices, and virtual private servers provided by hosting companies complicates the detection of malicious activities.
