In the past 15 years, China's share in India's industrial goods imports has increased from 21% to 30%, according to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). The growing trade deficit with China raises concerns over national security and economic implications. Between 2019 and 2024, India's imports from China soared from $70.3 billion to over $101 billion, leading to a cumulative trade deficit of over $387 billion in five years.
