Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a bill creating a new publicly funded private education subsidy for K-12 students, allowing families with eligible students in low-performing public school districts to use a $6,500 school voucher for private school tuition or homeschooling. The bill, Senate Bill 233, caps the state's investment into the program at 1% of the state's Quality Basic Education fund, currently $140 million a year. Critics argue the measure will ultimately hurt public schools by diverting funds.
