China's top Hong Kong official, Xia Baolong, urges focus on national security to protect Hong Kong's development, after new national security laws were enacted.

China's top official on Hong Kong affairs, Xia Baolong, has urged Hong Kong to focus on national security to protect its development. This comes after Hong Kong enacted new national security laws in March, which update or introduce laws to prohibit treason, sabotage, sedition, theft of state secrets, and espionage. Xia reassured investors that the law protects their rights, freedoms, property, and investments, although some foreign governments, including the US and UK, have criticized the new law as a tool for authorities to clamp down on dissent.
