Combining nature-based solutions with hard coastal defenses, like concrete sea walls, could create more adaptable and cost-effective defenses, reports a study in Nature Communications. Researchers analyzed 304 academic articles, finding that soft and hybrid measures, which support or enrich nature, performed better in low-risk areas than hard measures alone. While data on extreme events is lacking, the study supports the inclusion of nature-based solutions to protect and enrich coastal communities.
