Firefighting foam from an abandoned coal mine spill reaches three West Virginia waterways.
A spill of firefighting foam was detected in three West Virginia waterways, with potential downstream intakes notified. The foam, used to suppress fires at an abandoned coal mine, spilled from a contractor's workshop near Sissonville. The foam was later found in Tupper Creek, the Pocatalico River, and Wolfpen Branch. While significant concentrations were not expected to move downstream, investigators will continue to monitor the areas for impacts on aquatic life. The foam can cause skin and eye irritation if contact occurs.
