Second US human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) reported in Texas.

A second human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus, commonly known as bird flu, has been reported in Texas, marking the second human case in the US and the first linked to cattle exposure. The patient, who experienced eye inflammation as their only symptom, underwent antiviral drug treatment. Although the risk for the general public remains low, Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is working with state and federal health agencies to investigate the cases and understand the virus's spread. The cattle infections are not a concern for commercial milk supply as pasteurization kills avian flu viruses. The DSHS is providing guidance to affected dairies on minimizing workers' exposure and monitoring symptoms in those who work with infected cattle.
