The Netherlands will temporarily deploy Patriot missile systems to Lithuania as part of NATO's effort to enhance air defense capabilities in the Baltics. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's candidacy for the NATO Secretary General post is supported by Estonia and Lithuania, who believe he is prepared to strengthen the alliance and is sensitive to the threats faced on NATO's eastern flank. Rutte requires the approval of all 32 NATO members to be appointed, and currently has the support of 28 alliance states.
