This growth was largely driven by net overseas migration. The combined growth rate for the capitals was 3.0%, more than double the growth rate for regional Australia (1.4%). Melbourne and Sydney added 167,500 and 146,700 new residents, respectively. The largest population growth was observed in outer-suburban areas of the capital cities.
