94-year-old Baltimore Orioles owner and lawyer Peter Angelos dies; Orioles sold for $1.73bn to David Rubenstein's consortium.
94-year-old Peter Angelos, owner of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team and prominent lawyer, has died. Angelos, whose family agreed to sell the Orioles for $1.73bn to Carlyle Group Inc co-founder David Rubenstein and a consortium of investors, bought the franchise in 1993 for $173m. During his time as owner, Angelos helped keep the Orioles in Baltimore and spent lavishly on free agents, but faced criticism for his involvement in team management and personnel decisions. He was a major philanthropist, supporting various institutions in Baltimore, including the University of Baltimore and the city's symphony orchestra.
