Ontario is offering $5,000 bonuses and making 100 wildland firefighter and pilot positions permanent to recruit and retain workers amid an increase in wildfires. Last year, the province faced its worst wildfire season, with 700 forest fires burning 441,000 hectares. The government aims to increase the forest firefighting workforce, with most of the 660 firefighters being part-time, and will also buy new equipment and provide $1,000 bonuses to support staff.
