10 Canadian provinces, including Newfoundland and Labrador, end immigration detention agreements with the Canada Border Services Agency by 2025.

10 Canadian provinces, including Newfoundland and Labrador, have committed to ending their immigration detention agreements with the Canada Border Services Agency. Newfoundland and Labrador will no longer incarcerate people solely for immigration purposes in its provincial jails by March 31, 2025. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International Canada laud this decision, as the use of provincial jails for immigration detention contradicts international human rights standards and negatively impacts mental health.
