Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted in 2006, made his first public appearance after early release from a corruption sentence; set for a 3-day trip to Chiang Mai.
Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra made his first public appearance since early release from a jail sentence for corruption. Visiting a Bangkok temple, he is set for a three-day trip to Chiang Mai, his home city and traditional political power base. Thaksin's sentence was reduced from eight years to one year by King Maha Vajiralongkorn upon his return to Thailand in August. His early release was possible due to his age and health. A billionaire and twice-elected premier, Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 military coup and has long been opposed by Thailand's royalist and pro-military establishment.
