Former UN diplomat Giandomenico Picco, known for resolving international crises in the 1980s and 1990s including the Iran-Iraq war and hostage releases, has passed away at age 75. Picco worked at the United Nations from 1973 until 1992, and was appointed to the executive office in 1982 by Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, the fifth secretary-general. Picco's negotiation skills also helped resolve the kidnappings of Westerners by Hezbollah in Lebanon.
