1/3 of Italians cut olive oil consumption due to rising prices, while domestic sales of Italian extra virgin olive oil increase by 8%.

1/3 of Italians have reduced their consumption of extra virgin olive oil due to rising prices, according to a Piepoli institute survey. Supermarket prices for olive oil have increased from €4 to €9 per bottle, leading to a 30-50% reduction in consumption for some. However, Italian producers argue that sales of higher-quality Italian extra virgin olive oil are actually up. The industry has seen a clarification of the market, with higher prices separating lower-quality extra virgin olive oils from premium extra virgin olive oils. Domestic sales of extra virgin olive oil produced in Italy have increased by 8% in the first two months of this year.
