Rhode Island's Department of Environmental Management closed a 458-acre area in Bristol Harbor to shellfishing due to a sewage overflow caused by heavy rain. An estimated 180,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into the harbor from the Bristol Wastewater Treatment Facility. The closure will remain in effect until March 30, following federal Food and Drug Administration guidance for safe shellfish harvest.
