78-year-old Cuban dissident Martha Beatriz Roque Cabello, known for her longstanding opposition against her country's single-party system, will receive the 2024 International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award from the US government. Roque, who has been imprisoned twice and accused of being a US agent, has remained in Cuba despite restrictions on her leaving the island. The IWOC Award, now in its 18th year, recognizes women worldwide who advocate for peace, justice, human rights, gender equity, and equality. Roque created the Internal Dissidence Working Group and has fought for political and economic openness.
