Five animals have died recently at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium since July 2023, including a gorilla, an elephant calf, and a sea lion. Zoo CEO Dr. Jeremy Goodman stated there was no human error or miscalculated drugs involved in any of the deaths. The zoo closed for a day to allow staffers to grieve, and internal and external reviews have concluded that human error was not a factor in the animals' deaths.
