In central Philippines, government forces killed three suspected rebels and wounded 4 soldiers in a clash with the New People's Army (NPA) in Negros Occidental province. The fighting occurred in Escalante City around 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday. NPA rebels have been fighting the government since 1969 and are now estimated to have 2,000 members, down from their peak strength in the 1980s.
