Federal Energy Regulatory Commission denies permits for Navajo Nation hydropower project.

Federal energy regulators have denied permits for a contentious hydropower project on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) stated that it was establishing a new policy about collaboration with tribes, saying that it will not issue preliminary permits for projects proposing to use tribal lands if the tribe on whose lands the project is to be located opposes the permit. Indigenous advocates and conservation groups are celebrating the move as a victory for tribes.
