A strong earthquake struck southern Guatemala.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southern Guatemala on Friday, causing some residents to flee their homes and leading to early reports of damage to buildings. The quake was also felt in neighboring El Salvador, although no injuries or significant damage were immediately reported. The US Geological Survey reported that it struck at a depth of 108 km, with its epicenter near the Guatemalan town of Taxisco, 60 miles south of the capital, Guatemala City. There were reports of some minor damage, including parts of the facade of a church in the town of San Pablo Jocopilas collapsing.
