USGS says the quake hit at 8.53 p.m. local time, with epicenter 8 km southeast of Jalapa city, at a depth of 265.5 km. Seismological institutes in El Salvador and Nicaragua recorded the quake at 5.9 and 5.2 magnitudes, respectively. Central America is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active region.
