The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared cytisine a potential new treatment for smoking cessation.

Cytisine, a plant-based compound that has been used as a stop-smoking aid since the 1960s in Eastern Europe, has been found to increase the chances of successful smoking cessation by over two-fold compared with placebo. It has shown no serious safety concerns and may be more effective than nicotine replacement therapy. However, cytisine is unavailable in most countries outside of central and eastern Europe, limiting its potential global impact, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
